Crime and punishment is always a point of contention within the US legal system. Whether it is widely varying sentencing for people of differing ethnicities who committed similar crimes or a slap on the wrist for white collar criminals. There will always be opposing viewpoints on how the law is applied to individual cases. In the case of Ronnie Lee Gardner a convicted murderer sentenced to death in Utah for several slayings in the 80′s, the protests over capital punishment have reached a feverish pitch. Gardner was given the choice of execution method and in dramatic fashion he chose death by firing squad. His rational “I lived by the gun, I murdered with a gun, so I will die by the gun.” Protesters outside of his execution held a candle light vigil and called for an end to the death penalty. the untold victims of these executions are the executioners themselves, as they pay a heavy spiritual toll. Russia today reports on how one correction officer dealt with having taken over 50 lives in the course of his career.
