When you hear a song like “My Girl” by the Temptations it easy to forget the period it was written in. America in 1964 was a racially tumultuous place. For such an uplifting song to come out of that period was a testament to the mental fortitude and creative expression fostered at Motown Records.
Upon viewing the ‘Dancing In The Rain’ video I immediately thought of the Temptations and the beauty they were able to create out of urban rubble. The young men in this video have pulled off an equally impressive feat. They’ve set art in motion against the urban landscape. What they now perform for free in the streets will one day be the vanguard of modern dance. Astounding!
“My Girl” is a 1964 song recorded by The Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) label which became a number one hit in 1965. Written and produced by The Miracles members Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, the song became the Temptations’ first U.S. number-one single, and is today their signature song. Robinson’s inspiration for writing this song was his wife, Miracles member Claudette Rogers Robinson. The song was featured on the Temptations album The Temptations Sing Smokey.-Wikipedia
