Thanks for these. My favourite scince based ‘magic’ effect is that of seemingly causing a pen to move on its own accord (by the power of your mind etc). there’s no blowing involved and no invisible threads or magnets. You take the pen and a small bottle with its cap on. You then explain that in order to be responsive to the psychic energy, you must ritually clean the objects used first. So you than rub the bottle and then the pen with a clean cloth nylon helps, hint hint ;) . Then holding the pen by the cap you balance it over the top of the bottle neck. As you concentrate and place your hands near the pen it begins to spin on its own and you can, at will, make it turn in any direction. You then pick up the pen and let others try – but they can’t do it? Can you figure out how that is done?

Yes. Rubbing the pen with a nylon cloth builds up static electricity. When you bring your fingers close to it the charge from your body repels it. Once you pick up the pen, all the static electricity is dissipated and no one else can get it to move. Cool trick.
