With the technorati descending on Austin, Texas for SXSW 2011, the chatter online has been building over which startup will be the next Twitter or Foursquare. What will be the next social app that we didn’t know that we needed but now can’t live without?
Caleb Elston co-founder of ’Yobongo‘ thinks they have what it takes to win that coveted accolade of being the star of SXSW. They’ve built an app that taps into the current location based services craze and melded it with our human need to meet people of like minds. Can technology bridge that gap that divides totally strangers with a myriad of similar interests?
Yobongo is a location based chat service that alerts its users of people with similar interests in their nearby vicinity.
Imagine walking down the street and Yobongo notifies you that an art exhibit is underway one block over, also there is someone their with a love of realist art. The app would then connect the two of you to chat based on your proximity and similar tastes. I could also see this app taking off in Japan and helping to bridge that shyness gap so prevalent in their culture. Brilliant!
We’ll soon find out at SXSW 2011 how many awesome or not people Yobongo can introduce you too. Do you think it could become the Twitter for real life?
