For the budget conscious photographer looking to get the most bang for their buck, the decision on whether to splurge on the lens or the camera can be a difficult call. In recent years the quality of entry level DSLRs have improved tremendously. A sub $800 DSLR now have image sensors that are comparable to their four figure pro siblings.
With this small piece of information, we can begin to see how a cheaper camera with a pro lens can be a powerful combination.
We got sent a question asking us: What would be better? A pro DSLR with a cheapo lens or a cheapo DSLR with an expensive lens? – Kai (DigitalREV)
The quick answer is to go with the entry level DSLR and use your savings to purchase the best lens possible. A higher quality lens will capture better light and compensate for the slightly smaller sensor in the camera.
On the flip side, an expensive camera with a cheap lens gives sub-par results. No matter how great the sensor and and technology inside the camera, if the light coming in doesn’t get focused properly, you will end up with soft blurred images.
