Some ten days after hackers brought down the Sony PlayStation Online network, senior management of Sony Japan finally stepped forward to give a heartfelt apology to its customers. Kaz Harai CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment was on hand to lead the ceremonial bowing before the media.
In traditional Japanese culture bowing is used as a greeting and sign of respect. However, in this case it was used as an apology to show the full extent of remorse they felt over the damage caused to their loyal customers. As a matter of form depending on the severity of the wrong doing the head is lowered more and the bow is held for a longer duration. Prior to bowing Kaz Harai stated “We offer our sincerest apologies”.
Among several topics discussed at the news briefing was that the network vulnerability was known prior to the attack. In a move to allay the fears of its user base Sony revealed the following information.
- User credit card information was not compromised.
- The Playstation network and Qriocity music service will be the first to come back online.
- Sony will offer free downloads of specific games as an amends to users.
- Premium subscribers will receive a free month of service.
- Full service will be available by mid May
What do you think, did Sony do enough to make up for this massive security breach?
