It’s not often that we get to see the hand of the artist actively participating in the creation of his work. Usually we are treated to a completed animation, full of color and visual effects. At this point little mental effort is needed on our part to appreciate the finished piece.
The artists behind TIJI “COLOUR” wanted to bring greater emotional impact to their work. They achieved this by crafting a strikingly stark landscape devoid of color. As the viewer, we are lead into the scenery of a lush forest minus the greenery we are accustomed to. The animals run around in a black and white sketch book drawing, it feels as if we’ve interrupted a half complete work.
When the paint brush appears loaded with color we breath a sigh of relief, at last these cute animals will be freed from this dull existence. The brush dances across the screen revealing vibrant flowers, rich green grass, red fruit in the trees and neon pink flamingos wading in a pond.
It is not until the painting is complete that we realize that it was all a picture book fantasy dreamed up by the creative mind of a child who feels sorry for the poor panda who lacked color like his fellow forest dwellers.
TIJI “COLOUR” is an enchanting tale of discovery and compassion.
A black and white forest is colored in vibrant hues under our eyes except for one sad little panda, which sets off the compassion of an imaginative little boy.
