Lady Gaga has released the video to her new single ‘Judas’. If the title didn’t tip you off then the video’s imagery will. The whole thing comes off as another blatant attempt on Gaga’s part to rouse Christian disdain by filling her video with Catholic iconography. The visuals for the video can be best described as Mad Max meets Thriller in LA.
Gaga rides into the opening seen on the back of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle being driven by none other than Jesus himself, crown of thorns and all. Trailing behind her are the 12 Disciples of Christ dressed as leather clad Hell’s Angels impersonators.
From there we treated to a red bikini clad Gaga performing an elaborate dance routine at the ‘Electric Chapel’. While at the chapel she confronts Judas with gold plated lipstick gun. The blonde haired cornrowed Christ figure opts to spare Judas’ life and instead they share a bath together (fully clothed) with Mary Magdalene.
Lady Gaga in the role of Mary Magdalene proceeds to wash the feet of Christ as Judas pours a can of beer on her ass.
One could spend all day analyzing a Lady Gaga video and still not catch all the iconogrpahy thrown in there. Despite her valiant efforts to elicit shock value, the video still falls flat and feels forced in many ways.
Regardless of my critique, I’m certain Judas will go on to be another mega hit on Youtube garnering tens of millions of hits.
