Google’s Purchase of Motorola Shakes Up The Mobile World!

Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility gives them control of the entire Android ecosystem. This $12.5 billion purchase is said to be merely a strategic measure to secure patents rights in the battle against Microsoft, RIM and Apple. In light of Microsoft’s recent deal with Nokia to create Windows Phone handsets, it seems the future of mobile involves finding the right manufacture and OS partnership.

Google will now have air tight integration between its Android OS and Motorola smartphones and tablets. This means a better mobile experience for all consumers. On the consumer end, you get the benefits of timely Android OS updates to your phones.

Apple’s dominance of the smartphone market has been largely due to its control over the manufacturing process as well as developing iOS internally. By keeping everything in house Apple has managed to focus on one device at a time. Unlike makers of Android handsets that produce multiple phones a year, Apple releases only one iOS device annually. When faced with the prospect of releasing one, making or break device each years, Apple has to ensure that they put their best engineering skills into each iPhone.

Not so with the bevvy of Android phones and tablets flooding the market. In terms of shipping massive numbers, the Android OS was able to gain 33% of the mobile phone market. Anyone who has ever owned or tried out the army of Android devices available knows that the quality of devices vary drastically. There is no one set standard, some have large Super AMOLED screens others do not, some have a sturdy construction, while some feel like flimsy plastic bodies.

The acquisition of Motorola allows Google to fulfill the mandate of the Nexus S , to be the standard bearer for all other Android handset makers. By reducing the number of handsets Motorola produces per year, Google can vastly improve the quality and cache of the Android brand.

I for one can’t wait to see how this deal affects the future of the Xoom brand. This is one area ripe for innovation, seeing that Motorola makes only one tablet, Google can focus on making future iterations of the Xoom a true challenger to iPad.
